Well today’s image is of a clay tile that no one really knows too much about. If you go east on Anderson Avenue and stop in front of 74 Anderson Avenue, look up; you will see four clay tiles with the Cutler circle logo in the middle of an eagle with the name Cutler Manufacturing Co. Rochester NY, U.S. Mail Chute in the scroll. The company was started by James Goole Cutler (April 24, 1848-April 21, 1927) who invented this Mail Chute delivery system and as an architect for Andrew Jackson Warner, designed and installed the first one in the Elwood Building in 1884, Downtown, Rochester NY. In association with his brother J.W. Cutler this patented delivery system (Patent # 284.951 on September 11, 1883, the design stated that it must 'be of metal, distinctly marked U.S. Letter Box.,' and that the 'door must open on hinges on one side, with the bottom of the door not less than 2'6' above the floor.' If the building was more than two stories then the collection box was to be outfitted with a cushion to prevent injury to the mail.) went into the lobbies of the Powers Building, the Times Square Building, over 900 buildings in NYC and many skyscrapers in Chicago and all across the country.
